Balance and Power

At a time when the nation is preoccupied with heightened security and surveillance, and the public is fascinated by Reality TV with its open and surreptitious video exposure of participants, the boundaries between performance, voluntary acting for the camera, and surveillance, involuntary recording on camera by power systems with an interest in the movement of citizens, become blurred. The exhibition Balance and Power is an attempt to understand the complex relationship between the issues of performance, surveillance, and power, through videoart works.

La telecamera: il sogno e l’incubo del presente. Dai reality show, che pretendono di rappresentare il reale sfruttando l’esibizionismo sfrenato, alla sorveglianza sempre maggiore cui siamo sottoposti per la paura del terrorismo e della criminalità. Su questa forte dicotomia dei nostri tempi riflette una mostra intitolata Balance and Power: Performance and Surveillance in Video Art allestita presso il Krannert Art Museum dell’università dell’Illinois.
L’esposizione indaga sia l’aspetto sociologico che quello artistico della “sorveglianza”. Esposte opere ormai storiche di Andy Warhol, Vito Acconci, Bruce Neumann, accanto a lavori più recenti come quelli di Jenny Marketou e Antenna. Tutte le opere sono legate da un fil rouge: l’indagine sulla complessa relazione tra l’essere ripresi consapevolmente e l’essere sorvegliati a propria insaputa” tra la performance voluta e ricercata degli esibizionisti e l’involontario protagonismo degli spiati. La mostra, aperta fino al 31 di dicembre, è curata da Michael Rush, autore di molti saggi sulla videoarte e sulla new media art editi da Thames and Hudson.
